Collaboration with Brouwerij Kees

When our friends from Brouwerij Kees visited us for a collaboration brew on July 4th, we felt we had no choice but to brew something inspired by the US of A, and there's nothing more American than apple pie. So this rich imperial stout is inspired by the classic dessert, using additions of apple, cinnamon, allspice and vanilla to provide a flavour profile fit for Independence Day.

Pours a pitch-black coloration with a large, fluffy head that soon fades to a thin ring, leaving some spiderweb lacing around the glass. Smell is quite dominated by the cinnamon and and allspice, with lighter vanilla, chocolate and candy apple notes and the caramel, slightly roasted malts remaining surprisingly in the background. Taste follows the nose, being quite dominated by the spices used, with cinnamon and especially allspice standing out and lighter vanilla and candy apple notes that the caramel, slightly roasted malts kinda play second fiddle to, although still providing a certain balance and hints of chocolate and licorice. Finishes sweet'ish, with a light bitterness and some allspice and apple lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

While I usually like to sing praises to Cloudwater, I found this kind of poorly balanced, it is a collaboration though, so who knows. The spices are just way overdone here, especially the allspice, which feels really overpowering, but also the vanilla, making this a little too sweet. Still, this remains enjoyable enough due to some lighter roasted, bitter notes, with the apple adding an interesting element as well. I guess they kinda succeeded at what they were going for here, although the spices are just way overdone, unfortunately.
