Rich, sweet and overflowing with big flavours, Barley Wine is the quintessential sipping beer and a real winter warmer. Taking inspiration from our friends at JW Lees, creators of the acclaimed Harvest Ale, we fermented with their house yeast strain to create an English-style Barley Wine that blends deep malt flavours with bold, fruity yeast esters.

Pours a slightly cloudy, deep, dark amber coloration with a medium, creamy head. Smells of bready, caramel malt, toffee and red/dark fruit, with notes of red currant, plum and fig. Taste is an excellent balance of bready, caramel malt, toffee, malty dark fruit, estery red berries and hoppy citrus fruit, with notes of plum, fig, red currant, strawberry and candied orange zest, as well as just a hint of brown sugar and licorice. Finishes bittersweet, with a very light biterness and some toffee and red/dark fruit lingering in the aftertaste. Full mouthfeel with a rich body and light carbonation.
Even though I'm not a huge fan of the style, I can still recognize this as a great example of it. It's quite rich, sweet and fruity, but never becomes too syrupy or boozy, with a certain, light bitterness in the finish providing some balance here, as well as quite a wide array of malty, estery and hoppy fruit notes. Certainly too sweet for my personal taste, but rather well-balanced and complex overall, making for a rather nice sipper.
