Crop Year 2019 series #13: Columbus Single Hop IPA
In the early 70s, while Chuck Zimmerman was in heated discussions over the rights to Columbus, or Tomahawk (to use its trademark name), another Zimmerman by the name of Tucker released Ten Songs.
Years later, in the early 2000s, by which time Columbus had firmly established itself as a favourite hop used to add backbone and bitterness to APAs and Pale Ales, Ten New Songs, a masterful album by Leonard Cohen was released.
Columbus isn’t new, and may no longer occupy a prime position, but like those classic records of days gone, that don’t make it junk.

Pours a hazy, orange coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of biscuity malt and dank and herbal hops, with just a hint of citrus accents. Taste is a great balance of biscuity malt and bitter, rather herbal, dank and spicy hops, with lighter citrus and resinous accents and notes of orange rind, black pepper and pine. Finishes with a medium/strong bitterness and some dank and herbal hops lingering in the aftertaste. Soft mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.
I think this IPA is an excellent showcase of Columbus hops with its rather herbal, dank and spicy, almost pungent character and piney, citrus accents, finishing with a strong bitterness. As is typical for Cloudwater, while the flavor profile is that of a regular IPA, the look and mouthfeel are more reminiscent of a New England IPA, combining the best of both worlds. I loved this, but the flavor profile is not going to be for everyone, being dominated by herbal, rather than fruity notes.
