Crop Year 2019 series #11: Cascade Single Hop IPA
Released in the early 70s, Cascade hops, named after the California to British Columbia mountain range, became a staple in new US beer styles, such as the American Pale Ale. Often overlooked by modern breweries, it’s a hop that once was, and still is, revered for its grapefruit and pine aromas.
Take it on as you would a short history lesson, and though its modern setting in this beer is far removed from the original beers it took centre stage in, enjoy it as a looking-glass back into the pioneering trailblazers that came before us.

Pours a hazy, golden amber coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of biscuity malt and citruzs hops, with a vibrant pink grapefruit aroma and lighter herbal, spicy accents. Taste is a great balance of biscuity malt and and citrus hops, with strong pink grapefruit and lighter tangerine notes, as well as some herbal, dank and spicy accents, with just a hint of black pepper. Finishes with a light/medium bitterness and some pink grapefruit and peppery spice lingering in theb aftertaste. Smoozh mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.
Despite the name and label notes, this really feels a lot more herbal, dank and spicy than downright piney and resinous, with some black pepper and rather strong citrus notes coming through as well, with pink grapefruit standing out particularly.
