Pours jet black with fine, chocolate colored head.

Smell is roasted and a bit sweet. Notes of chocolate, vanilla, oak, rum and hints of chili, bell peppers and cinnamon.

Taste is roasted, spicy and a bit sweet. Notes of chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, chili and bell peppers. Slight heat and some coffee ground bitterness on the finish.

Mouthfeel is full, chewy and smooth with good carbonation.

Overall, a very interesting stout, where the chilies stay subtle, thankfully.

Blind-tasted except for the beer's name and brewery/country,...
L- Seriously black, had a 2mm white/dark tan swirly foam cap that's now cleared to a thin perimeter ring.
S- Smells of coffee/cocoa + some lactose in that order, not a sldge-hammer though.
T- WOOOAH! Mega-cocoa, as in bitter cocoa not cosy accessible 'hot chocolate'. It's SO pungent it made me involuntarily shudder. ...Then I take it this off-piste zing in the finish is chili pepper. Has to be, it really lingers on the palate. Is there liquor-barrel ageing here too?
F- It's pungent then the chili takes it up another level altogether. So yes it's certainly rich but the extreme flavour rather distracts from it.
O- It's very unusual, in many ways un-beer-like, and a candidate beer to share as say 100ml of it would be ample to get the experience. I suggest starting it quite chilled, the chili really seems to amp up as it warms and you cannot rush this one. Interesting to try but too out-there and full-on for me to buy again; oh and flippin' expensive too. ps. Don't plan on tasting any other new beers after this one, my palate is obliterated for the rest of the day.
Review1994/scoring all done, now the reveal, I get to read the lables to see what I missed! ==> 'Inspired by Mayan hot chocolate.' Contains wheat, barley, oats. Contains chilli and cinnamon.
440ml can BB: 02/01/2022 £8.25 Bought from TremblingMadness, York/UK as part of a large pick-your own consignment to London.
