A collaboration with Yakima Chief Hops.

We adore the experience of working with new varieties of hops. Rubbing the sticky flowers between our fingers, inhaling the fresh, vibrant aromas and imagining a beer that will really bring them to life. So we're delighted to work with our friends at Yakima Chief Hops to use their experimental variety HBC 586. We've paired it with Loral to create a highly-aromatic, hazy IPA combining bright orange with guava, papaya and delicate floral notes.

Pours a hazy, deep orange coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of light biscuity malt and tropical/citrus hops, with notes of lychee, guava and tangerine, as well as a distinct floral potpourri note. Taste is a good balance of light biscuity malt and fruity, juicy, floral, slightly spicy hops, with strong tropical and lighter citrus notes of lychee, guava, papaya and tangerine, as well as a distinct floral potpourri note and hints of black pepper. Finishes with a light/medium bitterness and some lychee, papaya, tangerine and potpourri lingering in the aftertaste.

I really disliked this at first, due to the strong, floral potpourri aroma and taste, which I first likened to the HBC 586 hops, reminding me of HBC 520, although the Loral is probably the more likely culprit here, probably my least favorite hop variety due to that strong floral quality. It grew on me as I drank it though, with the floral notes seemingly more fading into the background and some intense, unusual tropical qualities shining through, with lychee and guava really standing out here, as well as hints of spicy black pepper and zesty citrus. Overall, this makes for an enjoyable NEIPA with an interesting, slightly unusual flavor profile that is just not quite to my personal taste though.

Pours a vibrant, hazy orange with thick, fluffy head.

Smell is juicy, sweet and slightky dank and earthy. Notes of mango, pineapple, melon, weed, citrus and some vanilla.

Taste is juicy and dank with a soft but solid bitterness. Notes of mango, melon, wood, lemongrass, nectarine and gooseberries.

Mouthfeel is medium, soft and pillowy with good carbonation.

Overall, you guessed it! A great hybrid IPA.
