362ml (?) stubby (yay!) bottle. This is just the latest incarnation of a local brewer producing the 'official' beer for Edmonton's The Bear radio station, 100.3 on yer FM dial.

This beer pours a slightly hazy, medium bronzed amber colour, with three fingers (in the air - woooooo!) of puffy, rocky, and sort of creamy ecru head, which leaves some splattered and broken webbed lace around the glass as it lazily recedes.

It smells of semi-sweet, biscuity caramel malt, further sweet toffee pudding notes, some muddled citrus and stone fruitiness, and plain earthy, leafy, and somewhat grassy hop bitters. The taste is bready and doughy caramel malt, a softer biscuity toffee candy thing, mildly acrid orange and red grapefruit rind, a touch of (carry on my) wayward son yeast, and more gentle leafy, weedy, and wet grassy green hoppiness.

The carbonation is fairly adequate in its supportive and sometimes jovial frothiness, the body a solid middleweight, and generally smooth, just a wee fruity astringency not playing nice with the other kids. It finishes off-dry, and trending more toward the bitter than the sweet - huh.

Overall, this is a very well-made Canadian Amber Ale, the type with just enough hops to keep the tongue scraper away, but not so much as to be confused with being American. The label's marketing blurb indicates that this was 'designed and brewed specifically for The Bear', but I'm sure that they had to start from somewhere, and that somewhere seems to be the Patrolman's ESB - not a bad thing at all.
