If you like hoppy beers, this ale is for you! Reminiscent of the hop forward beers from the west coast, this IPA holds its own. 2 Row and Vienna malts provide the stability needed to add copious amounts of Simcoe and Citra hops. Grapefruit and citrusy flavors will punish your tongue with every sip.

Stable 12 Brewing Co. "Wild West Coast IPA"

$6 / pint
Notes: Interesting beer... Simcoe, Citra, and Chinook hops with pale and Vienna malts. It's listed at 108 IBUs but there's no way it's even close - the calculations might give them that, but it's more like 75 in reality. As to the 7.8% ABV, I'll totally believe that although it is well-cloaked, which is good. It's a very hazy golden beneath a white head. It looks kind of like a witbier. The head is short-lived and drops to a thin collar with minimal lacing (possible dirty glass?). The aroma is resinous, citrusy, piney like dried pine needles on a forest floor, and just a touch catty. It also displays yeast, as in the actual yeast, not yeasty fruitiness, and grainy malt. That grainy malt reappears in the flavor and in my notes I've listed it as biscuity because it didn't really come across as toasty, but I was having trouble coming up with a descriptor. I like the blend. I don't think they're using too much Vienna malt, and it gives it just enough character to bring the malt alive while not letting it get too big against the hops. Perfect balance in that sense. It's centered by a solid bitterness, and it finishes dry with lingering citrus and pine in the finish. Medium leaning medium-light in body and crisp. So is it a good example of a West coast IPA? Yeah, I'll give it that. I wouldn't call it "Wild" though. Good pint! Worth trying.
