This is a very well done RIS! Pours are silky jet black with a thin yet creamy off-white head. Dark roasted chocolate malt and coffee aroma. Probably one of the better balanced flavors of a RIS. Bitter, but somewhat smooth. Lush mouthfeel with a dry finish. Overall, excellent!

Poured into a wide mouth grip shaped goblet: color is solid black, head is light tan and presents less than one finger thick, head dissipates to thin top with some spotty lacing on the glass sides.

Smell is roast, coffee, toast, dark fruit.

Taste is light roast, some cocoa, light coffee, toast, dark fruit, no booziness.

Mouthfeel is lower carbonation, moderate sweetness, low/moderate bitterness.

Overall a very solid RIS - roast, cocoa, toasted coffee, a bit light on emphatic flavor and bitterness but not too sweet.

Look: It pours very dark brown with a brown head. Head retention is low.

Feel: It has roasted aromas with some nuts and a bit of coffee.

Taste: It has roasted flavors with coffee. There are dark fruits with prunes being the strongest. There are very low nut elements.

Feel: It has a full body with a silky texture and pleasantly warm alcohol warming.

Overall, a nice imperial stout with plenty of dark malt flavors and some dark fruits.

The CANQuest (tm) is back for New Tying Up Loose Ends Beer Sunday, Redux (Week 760)! I left off last week at this point simply because I was not up for a 12.0% ABV beer. I am going back to beddy-bye after this one & then going to see "Hustlers" this afternoon so I wanted to get the early start.

From the CAN: "Imperial Stout"; "From Barn to Brewery"; "Find Our Story at Stable12.com"; "Handcrafted and Brewed [in] Phoenixville, PA"; "Please Recycle"; "This smooth tasting stout appears sweet and innocent, but this is no 8 second ride. The flaked oats create a silky smooth feel in this Russian Imperial. Chocolate malts and roasted barley come together to create a hearty nose. The velvety finish of this stout makes it deceivingly delicious and leaves you wanting one more ride."

I CANtinued with a Crack! & slow, gentle C-Line Glug since the hour was late & I did not feel like dealing with a mess. I watched in rapt fascination as it presented a pseudo-cascade that eventually formed just under two fingers of foamy, fizzy, rocky, deep-tan/light-brown head with moderate retention. Color was Very Dark Brown to Black/Opaque (SRM = > 34, < 44) with cola highlights at the edges. Nose had a burnt, smoky, anise-like quality. Hmm. Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, thin for an RIS. The taste was highly bitter, very chocolaty, slightly smoky & reminiscent of overbaked brownies. 8=( I used to love to bake, especially casseroles, but as a dessert baker, there was little room for error since just a few moments too long & sweets would take on an unpleasant burnt quality. This beer reminded me of neglecting baking brownies for j-u-s-t that moment or two so that they were less than they could have been. Everything about this beer was just a tad off. The color was not dark enough. The mouthfeel was thin for the style. The taste was too bitter & burnt. Finish was smoky & dry, but I was developing a headache & it was leading me to lie down. 8=( YMMV.

Sampling a cellar temp 16 oz can poured into my snifter. The beer pours a dark cola brown with a fizzy khaki colored head of 1 cm that fades away to the thinnest of edge layers rapidly after the pour.
The aroma is some dark chocolate with a little bit of anice and roasted malt rounding out the nose. I dont really get any hops and the booze is well hidden on the aroma. Nose is a little mild for a 12% brew, but it is good for what it has.
The first sip reveals an average body and smooth texture with very fine and gentle rolling carbonation. Physical traits are making for an easy drinking big beer.
Flavor is all malt with roasted notes, brown sugar and sweet chocolate. Beer is a little sweeter than I expected but it certainly not cloying or in the dessert category.
I dont get any hops here either and the booze is pretty well hidden for the size of the ABV.
This is a decent Imperial stout that is pretty straightforward and is good for what it brings to the table. I would like a little more body and complexity, but there isnt anything flawed here. Glad I picked up a can while in PA.

A thanks to the creator of the canquest, woodychandler, for this beer. Poured from a 16 oz. can. Has a black color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of chocolate. coffee. Taste is chocolate, roasted malts, a bit sweet, alcohol is present, but no as much as you would expect from a 12% abv beer. Feels full bodied in the mouth and overall is a quality brew.
