7 January 2020 - Beer #2
Appearance: 4 - mostly black with a light tan head, definitely reddish at the edges. I prefer black black with a darker head.
Nose: 5 - lovely bourbon, but not overpowering. Just right. Better than expected after 6 months of barrel.
Taste: 4 - plenty of barrel, but a bit fake on the sweetness. Lacks foundation, but perfectly drinkable on a Tuesday evening.
Mouth: 4 - wants to stick around but thins out on the back end.
Overall: 4 - a solid, yet forgettable barrel-aged imperial stout. Even though I've never had this, I feel like I've had it 100 times.
Cheers!

On draught at Poor Henry's in Montville, NJ. It pours nearly jet black with a fluffy, khaki-colored head and thick, extensive lacing. The smell is bourbon-forward with roasted malt, fresh coffee, chocolate, and nuts. This is just terrific: it's very much bourbon forward with lots of chocolate, freshly-brewed coffee, caramel, and nuts. However, as the glass warms the chocolate becomes more intense. The flavors blend beautifully. It has a truly great mouth feel for a Stout: thick, creamy, chewy, with low carbonation, and you can feel the heat from the 10.5% ABV. Overall, this is a tour de force! Big bourbon but it doesn't overwhelm the chocolate and coffee. I think this is Brix City's best offering yet.
