Copenhagen 19/5 2024. 33 cl bottle from Rewe, Süderquerweg, Hamburg. Pale orange version of Wildwuchs' usual design with the bearded fellow with a cap.
Pours opaque dark brown with a mid-sized off-white head. A bit bubbly. Settles as Thin Rim of foam running along the side of the glas. No lacing.
Aroma is medium intense with a sugary sweet, malty odor. Roasted and toasted dark malts. Brown sugar in abundance. Caramel, toffee and a whiff of alcohol.
Light carbonation. Medium thick, oily, a bit sticky, soft, almost flat texture.
Flavor is fairly intense with a strong sugary sweetness followed by a moderately strong bitterness. Aftertaste is sweet with a light bitter undertone. Lingers for a while. Finish is sugary.
Dark and very sweet brew.

Pours a cloudy, deep, dark mahogany coloration with a large, creamy head. Smells of roasted, bready malt and yeast esters of banana and clove. Taste follows the nose, being dominated by roasted, bready, slighly caramelly malt and strong estery yeast notes of banana and clove, with the clove standing out particularly, and hints of herbal hops, walnut and licorice as well. Finishes with a light bitterness and some clove lingering in the aftertaste. Thin mouthfeel with a light/medium body and medium carbonation.
This seems like an odd cross between a German Dunkelweizen and a Belgian Dark Ale, with a curious roasted quality and licorice notes to it. Does have a rather interesting flavor profile, actually, but is a bit let down by the somewhat thin and watery mouthfeel/body, especially considering the ABV. It's really not that bad though and this still makes for an interesting, decent brew.

Dark brown color with tan head. Aroma is quite spicy, a bit nutty and also somehow herbal. Taste starts astringent and spicy, gets quite boozy and finishes somehow astringent/tart with roasted malt flavor and medium bitterness. Medium body and carbonation. It's quite weird overall. I also get some cardboard and also the booze is quite off putting.

BOTTLE: Brown glass with a simple classy white label. Unbranded pry-off crown cap. Purchased at Craft Beer Store in Hamburg.
A: Head fills 90% of the glass, suggesting potential overcarbonation. Khaki colour, creamy, frothy, full. Retention is quite good - maybe ~10 minutes - but, again, I suspect overcarbonation. Leaves no lacing as it recedes.
Body is an opaque dark brown-black. No yeast is visible within.
Sm: Breadiness, dark malts, chocolate malts, walnut, must, and malty staleness. Overripe green banana. Off-putting and weak, seemingly lacking the robust malt backbone necessary for an 8% ABV beer. I find no real yeast character. Maybe some aniseed? Some kind of spice I can't put my finger on.
Aromatic intensity is average. Suggests a bready simple brew with no interesting flavours and limited depth.
T: Black bread, overripe banana, off-flavours (maybe acetaldehyde?), walnut, some kind of dark spice. Balance is horrid; this has no direction or focus and the flavours clash and compete. Bubble-gum phenols make an awkward appearance. Shallow depth of flavour across the board. The off-flavour really ruins it, but the malt backbone isn't robust enough to begin with...weak dark malts just don't cut it. I'm not keen on this beer at all, and I'm not sure what they were after; "imperial dark ale" is as nebulous a classification as one could come up with.
Mf: Weak and thin, lacking adequate body. It's not boozy, oddly, but it's definitely unrefreshing and unnecessarily filling and hefty on the palate. It's indeed problematically carbonated, but I think it's actually undercarbonated, strangely. Definitely gushed.
O: Flat-out bad work from Wildwuchs, and not a bottle I'd ever buy again or recommend to others. This attempt at a non-German style is just a miss, plain and simple. I'll finish the bottle with some effort, but the quality is quite low and drinkability suffers as a result. Whatever they were after, this is just poor, lacking any cohesion whatsoever and any redeeming flavours. One to avoid.
After some consideration and further drinking, I wouldn't rule out infection. The gushed mouthfeel (in spite of its undercarbonation) and off-flavour ridden taste may indicate it.
D (2.11) / AVOID
