Port & Our big, bold Barleywine ale aged in Five& 20's own used Port & Sherry barrels.

A big beer with an original gravity of 20plato, which ferments down to 4.5plato, making a full bodied beer. After fermentation, this beer was aged in some of our own Port & Sherry barrels, then blended back together.

After a long soak, in our Port & Sherry barrels, this aged Barleywine develops a brilliant dark red ruby color. The aroma is full of brown sugar and dark fruit, with notes of oak. This beer has a rich jammy mouthfeel, with caramel, dried cherry, toasted bread and black pepper flavors providing a warm, smooth finish.

Grain Bill: NY Pale Malt, 2 Row Barley Malt, Munich Malt, C-60 Malt, and Black Prinz.
Hops: Chinook in the boil for bittering, NY Cascades and whole cone NY Cluster Hops added to the Whirlpool for flavor/aroma.

IBU: 75
SRM: 41 (Dark Ruby Red).

Purchased at the brewery and aged for seven months. This beer is clear, dark garnet. The dense chestnut head reaches one and a half inches before settling to half an inch. It deposits a nice film on a Swiftwater Anniversary snifter before leaving patches of lace.

The aroma is initially sweet and vinuous. This quickly turns to caramel and vanilla, with a surprise of cocoa powder. Overall, the aroma is sweet and boozy.

It is quite sweet with bitterness preventing it from being cloying. Whipped cream and vanilla are countered by licorice and blackberries. The finish is brief, modest and earthy.

Alcohol is well expressed without being hot. The body is full with a creamy texture and lots of fine carbonation.

This is a good sipping beer, which I enjoyed slowly while reading during an early Spring afternoon with the sun shining brightly.
