Five & 20's Rye Pale Ale aged approximately 7 months in freshly emptied Five & 20 Rye Whiskey barrels, imparting powerful notes of vanilla and oak, with added spiciness and heat leftover from the spirit.
Brewed using rye malt for a spicy grain character with moderate hop additions using American hop varietals for a spicy, citrus flavor and aroma. Once fermentation is finished, the beer is aged in our freshly emptied Rye Whiskey Barrels for approximately 7 months.
A hazy copper/amber colored appearance with strong oak, vanilla, and slightly fruity aromas. Peppery spicy flavors and a light caramel roast flavor from the rye grains in the beer, and more strong wood and vanilla flavors that linger on the palate. Dry to medium bodied ale with a medium bitterness and medium carbonation.
Grain Bill: NY Pale Malt, C-10 Malt, NY Rye Malt, and Chocolate Malt
Hops: Chinook in the boil for bittering, Chinook and NY Cascade in the whirlpool for flavor/aroma.
IBU: 52
SRM: 12 (Medium Amber)

12oz bottle from brewery. Dark brown pour, foamy beige head, rings of lacing. Aroma is whiskey, rye, chocolate. Taste continues with balanced whiskey barrel flavors and the rye malts. Full, creamy, light warmth. A nice improvement to the rye pale ale.

On room temperature shelf at Franklin Beer, Franklin, PA. $ 13.00 (Including tax)/4-pack of 12 oz bottles ($ 0.271/oz). Reviewed 3/14/20.
Undated bottle. Stored at home at 42 degrees and served at 42 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Appearance – 3.
First pour –Slightly darkened yellow, slight haze.
Body – Amber, nearly opaque. When held to direct light, amber and hazy.
Head – Small (Maximum 1.5 cm, aggressive center pour), off-white, medium density, fizzy, short retention, diminishing to a three mm crown and no cap. Very scant effervescence is present.
Lacing – None.
Aroma – 3.5 – Weak whiskey and weaker fruit.
Flavor – 4 – Light whiskey. Barely noticeable rye spiciness, weak malt. Slight hop bitterness. No alcohol (7.1 % ABV as marked on the label) taste or aroma. No diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide.
Palate – 3 – Medium, watery, soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3.75 (Lost 0.25 point for undated personal container) Pleasing aroma but very weak. Much of the burn associated with “whiskey barrel aged” brews is noticeably attenuated here, fortunately. Unremarkable appearance and palate. The price point is good. This is a beer which I would again purchase.

This beer was sampled side-by-side with its base beer ""Rye Pale Ale".
Dark amber (SRM 9-10) and clear, unlike the base beer. The head is creamier and longer lasting than the base beer, leaving a coating of lace on a Nolan snifter. Fine, slow carbonation reinforces the head. The head is more almond with a hint of orange sherbet.
Whiskey is clearly showcased here, almost completely obscuring the floral hops of the base beer. Subtle rye and toffee are also here, but far more subtle than the base. Mint is just as present in both the base and this.
Whiskey flavor is balanced against the bitter and sweet legs. Bitterness fades more quickly than the whiskey while the sweetness holds throughout. The finish is long and mild, similar to green tea.
A medium body and soft texture lend well to light carbonation. Alcohol is as expected. The alcohol is softer and smoother than from the base beer.
Rhiskey Business is a relaxing beer to be enjoyed on a cold afternoon while reading.
