An Imperial stout aged in fresh sugar cane rum barrels, imported from Clément, Martinique, for over 6 months. Subtle notes of Chocolate and hazelnuts give way to intense aromas of oak and baking spices. Its like finding gold that tastes great!

355ml can - man, finding the ABV listing on the label was like one of those 'can you see the hidden...' Internet memes.

This beer pours a fairly solid black, with subtle amber basal edges, and two fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly brown head, which leaves some decent Swiss cheese profile lace around the glass as it evenly blows off.

It smells of lightly roasted, bready and doughy caramel malt, bittersweet cocoa powder, demarara sugar, boozy barrel staves, licorice root, and some plain earthy, musty, and lit-up floral hops. The taste is gritty and grainy caramel malt, a touch of biscuity toffee, medium dark chocolate, faint cafe-au-lait, simple syrup, an ethereal wet woodiness, anise spice, and more well-understated musty, herbal, and dead floral hoppiness.

The carbonation is pretty tame in its milquetoast frothiness, the body a so-so middleweight, and generally smooth, with perhaps a hint of alcohol ingress starting to rear up at this particular juncture. It finishes off-dry, the malt and cocoa essences showing the most lingering oomph.

Overall - yeah, the rum essences are fleeting at best, rendering a less than complex version of the style. The 20-proof wowee sauce is quite well integrated though, so sipping on this isn't really a chore - just writing about it is.
