Tall can, w/o any dating info...purchased at Bay Shore beer and soda a few days ago
Pour out a HUGE head, (first thought was -infected?)...its heavily clouded, darker tangerine...loads of frothy fluff left behind.
Ripe grapefruit on the sniff
Underneath all that froth/head, is a grapefruit loaded ale, grapefruit and more grapefruit...some maple/bready malts on the back end add some balance...Over carbonated at best...I'd be wary of purchasing further cans of this one for a few months (hopefully when a new batch is on the shelves)....

$3.89 per can at Alphabet City Brewing. "IPA brewed with Citra and Equinox."
CAN: No canned on or best before date. Amateurish screen-print label ("design by Jay Varney"). 16 fl oz format. Pull-tab.
"Brewed at Big aLICe Brewing Co. in collaboration with Destination Unknown Beer Co."
APPEARANCE: Translucent yellow-orange body of average vibrance. Not the brightest body colour, and somehow nontransparent in spite of being seemingly clear. No yeast/lees are visible within. The head is your standard ~5cm worth of off-white foam.
It's a pretty typical appearance given the style. Head retention is rather good - ~8 minutes.
AROMA: Pleasant and inviting, with mellow floral aromatics joined by citrus, honey, pineapple, and papaya. True to its hops, showcasing Citra's citrus and Equinox's tropical fruit well. A more vivid hop aroma than many. I'm intrigued.
Pale malt is there keeping everything balanced, but there's no overly sweet crystal or caramalt as far as I can discern.
Aromatic intensity is above average. No off-notes are detectable, and the alcohol seems to be kept in check.
TASTE & TEXTURE: Flavour profile is par for the course given the hop selection, offering citrus and tropical fruit flavour in the second act and finishing bitter. The bitterness is off-putting, hitting on grapefruit pith or tropical fruit rind, revealing the beer's imbalance. Pale malts do their best to keep the bitterness at bay, but they lose the battle by the late second act.
Citrus and tropical fruit flavours are less vivid than the aroma suggested, to the beer's detriment. Average flavour duration and intensity.
Smooth, wet, aptly medium-bodied, unrefreshing, overcarbonated, coating.
Approachable fare, but ultimately very middle-of-the-road. I think it just comes down to hop selection - maybe Citra and Equinox just don't pair that well together (at least alone with each other).
OVERALL: Drinkable but forgettable work from Destination and Big aLICe. Not a beer I'd buy again, especially at $3.89 per can. When sixers of Sculpin can be had for $13.00 (plus tax) in New York City, it'd be tough to recommend an IPA like this to anyone. There are no off-flavours or overt faults, but there's ample room for improvement.
