An Imperial Stout aged with Bourbon Vanilla Bean. "Sitting on Top of the World" is a folk-blues song written by Walter Vinson and Lonnie Chatmon, core members of the Mississippi Sheiks, a popular country blues band of the 1930s. We simply shortened the title for the beer’s namesake. A rich and complex dark ale, roasty-burnt malt with deep dark or dried fruit flavors, and a warming, bittersweet finish that includes bourbon notes with a hint of vanilla. This beer utilizes a complex blend of malts such as Pale Ale, Black, Roasted, Caramel, Chocolate and Special B malts. We use three hops including CTZ, Chinook and Cascade hops. A winter warmer for soul power! Notes: espresso, dark chocolate, nuts, bourbon, vanilla, dried fruits and alcohol.

Draft at brewery. Dark, inky black, small ring of head. Chocolate first in the aroma, some roast grains and coffee. Taste blends the chocolate and roast grains nicely, slick and oily. This would hold up in a barrel. Smooth.

Poured from a 16oz can into pint glass in January 2021. I do not see a brewed or canned date on the can.

Appearance: Very dark black with a thick dark brown head. Head was about 2 fingers high (higher than most other Imperial Stouts I have tried), and lasted a few minutes. The head was very fine with small bubbles. It left more lacing on the glass than most other stouts, and ended with a thin tan head still on the beer.

Smell: Interesting aroma mix of coffee, burnt malt, and bourbon, in that order. There is also some sweet aroma like black licorice, but overall the coffee and chocolate dominate the others.

Taste: There is an interesting balance between the flavors including coffee, hops citrus flavor & bitterness, a little bourbon, and sweetness like chocolate and caramel flavors. The coffee and malt flavors are pronounced, but balanced nicely with bitterness from the hops. The brewery's website states this beer has 92 IBUs, which I believe based on the taste.

Mouth-feel: Thick like liquid licorice, but with a smooth body. Not overly smooth like a Milk Stout. There is a strong alcohol presence, which matches the 10% on the label.

This is a complex, Imperial Stout, and it has a variety of flavors that adds a nice complexity to the beer. Although this is a big beer, it is very smooth and enjoyable to drink. This coffee is nicely contrasted by bitterness from the hops as well as a a little bourbon flavor, and is a nice balance to the high alcohol content. I would buy this again.
