Blue Earl Brewing Co. "Shake Your Hips"
16 fl. oz. can without production codes or freshness dating
$4 @ Kunda Beverage, King of Prussia, PA
Notes via stream of consciousness: "Shake Your Hips" - that'd be a good name for a beer made with rose hips but that's not the case here, this is a double dry-hopped IPA brewed with Mosaic, Citra, and El Dorado hops at 6.8% ABV from the first state of the union, Delaware, ratified on December 7, 1787. It's poured a hazy golden body with an orange sheen beneath a short head of white foam. The aroma is tropical and berry-like. I was honestly expecting more from a double dry-hopped IPA but I also have no clue as to how old this beer is without a production code or freshness dating - and I understand that, they're probably doing mobile canning, but there are ways around that. On to the taste then... it's fuller, and clearer. I'm getting orange, peach, berries, pineapple, some melon, a hint of lemon, and of course, wheaty and oaty malt. A firm bitterness balances it end to end and allows some sweetness to come through while still finishing dry and bitter. The head held up fairly well and there is some nice lacing left behind but it's not great. In the mouth it's medium bodied and crisp. All told it's a pretty decent IPA but it lacks that je ne sais quoi that makes a great beer.

A: Dank creamy orange coloring is dense and turbid, full of overactive carbonation bubbles. Firm cushy dull white head, one inch, with a solid retention rate. Sticky thin ring lacing.
S: Pineapple and peaches are abundant on the opening nose, juicy and fresh being first impression. Fresh apricot juice with a light background of pear as well. Lots of whirlpool hops here with a small mention of lemon candy, dank pine juices and oranges.
T: Dank tropical flavor, pineapple and oranges mix and are juicy fresh. A bittering dose of DDH soon follows with a bittering bite of citrus and herbal orange hop flowers. Dry strawberries and lemon conclude.
M: Creamy soft mouthful, bready full malting with an oily feel and texture. Nice feel overall.
O: DDH of bittering citrus is the key here, with a long and lingering mention of parching hop flowers. Big dry finish, nothing to fancy on the complexity, just an overload of ddh'ops. Creamy soft mouthful was the highlight.

Draft pours as a hazy, gold color. Has a nice citrus and tropical fruit aroma. The taste is very fruity with a mix of the mosaic, citra and el dorado hops. Pleasant and award flavor on the back end. A great double, dry hopped IPA.
