Classically porter and certainly robust, the White Squirrel brewers reach to the British version of the style for understated complexity, depth and balance.
White Squirrel Porter pours with a dark brown bark and coffee color, capped with a dainty sepia swirl. Roasty, toasty, chocolaty and with the delicacy of dark fruit and seared sugars, the scent is both coffee and cocoa-like. Robust sweetness of caramel, toffee and nuttiness are wrapped in a cocoon of coffee and toasted marshmallow roast.
As its sweetness relaxes on the middle palate, the ale turns to moderate roast, once again fueling a columbian blend of coffee with a hint of Ethiopian fruit, soil and campfire quality. Hints of fruit reveal a soft undercurrent of plum, grape and fennel before the hops deliver a broad and woodsy bitterness on the finish. An almond-like nuttiness provides a smooth vanilla after palate.
Medium full in body, the beer's textures show a glimpse of weakness and flatness nearing the finish while a hint of cola presents a short weakness. A pep of sherry and tea come with the bitterness while a long aftertaste of burnt cream and coffee looms.
