33 cl bottle from the brewery’s cooler.
Pours with less than a finger of foam, but has nice legs.
Nose is caramel, toffee, prune, alcohol.
Takes a mnute to swirl the taste buds. It’s a sip of the terroir it’s made in, with a squeeze of citrus. Cognac barrel, a fine roast malt, house yeast, wine undertones, slightly sweet, quite strong.
Full mouthfeel. Low carbonation.
Overall, well-executed barley wine.

I hope this beer is better than it's youthful name; I don't recall precisely what I paid for it but it was something like £6-8, hardly a beer pitched by the doubtless well-off brewery owners at the 'noble downtrodden worker'.
L- Pours very deep cherry-brown with a 1Cm ultra-fine bubble tan cap of bubbles. The head is one of the creamiest looking I have seen in a while and is holding up astonishingly well considering the 12%ABV is usually very good at killing head. It's a surface-tension thing vs the alcohol IIRC... anyway, very impressive. [ps at +15mins, continues to hold well, and forms lacing on the way down...].
S- Deep fruit, like British Xmas pudding, heavy on roasted stonefruit. I also get light timber suggesting this might be barrel-aged.
T- BOOM! First sip of beer today. Brighter than I'd anticipated. 2nd sip I physically shudder briefly. That is due to this clearly being barrel aged and it has a major liquor aspect going on. I often get the liquor wrong - I don't drink them; here it seems wine-like so I'll guess cognac/brandy. It's also this dry/bitter wine aspect that made me shudder!
F- It's perhaps rich but TBH the winey aspect is so pungently dry/bright that I don't really register it. For the same reason this is (for me) a slow sipping beer, it's just waaay too bombastic to rush. Also, to note, I served this fridge-cold and this will just get louder as it warms a touch.
O- It's a statement of a recipe this one, a seriously pungent beer that is way more impactful than it's already generous 12%ABV forewarns. Interesting to try - TBH it's SO pungent it is off the radar edge for me. I wouldn't buy it again, esp at UK prices. This could be a good candidate for a BA-head to share with a couple of beer-loving friends, you'll know by the 2nd sip whether it works for you...
#2050 - Bought from the always-surprise-finds-to titillate-the-palate Bacchanalia, Mill Road, Cambridge. 330ml bottle. BBE: 07/01/2023 Last word.... Take it out the fridge say 10-15mins pre-pouring to get hard-chill off it, that way you'll get the full intended impact!

L - Reddish amber almost no head
S - Toffee, booze, citrus, grass
T - Toffee, citrus, load of grapefruit, coconut and grass (sorachi ace profile), apple skin. The high bitterness balance the sweetness. Boozy.
F - Gentle carbonation, smooth as a brandy
O - A great barleywine (more American style than English style by the way). Went very well with a piece of panettone. A real dessert beer
