Wow, this was one unique brew. The pour was solid black with a nice tan head that wasn't quick to dissipate. I thought the smell was the best part about this beer. This first thing that hits the nose is a strong bourbon aroma, followed by roasted malts. Ah, and the taste was very solid. As in the aroma the bourbon is the fist thing that hits the pallet, not terribly strong but definitely noticeable. A mild oak taste also makes itself available, along with hints of chocolate. This brew was very heavy with a smooth finish. I thought this brew was excellent and apparently so did everyone else who was there seeing how fast it went. To bad it was the only day it was available.

It was quite a day at the River City Brewing Co. in Wichita. It was their tenth anniversary and it seemed as though half the city turned out to help celebrate the occasion. To help make the day even more special, brewer Dan Norton created this wonderful brew which was only to be on tap for this special day. Actually, the three kegs only lasted about five hours. But, oh, what a wonderful five hours they were.

Just so you know a little about the brew, this beer was a standard porter that was aged 2 1/2 months in used Jack Daniels oak casks. Hence the name . . .

Appearance: This beer came out of the tap jet black, with a head that almost made me weep right there on my barstool. It rose up huge, being rocky and fluffy both at the same time. It took its sweet time settling down, leaving some serious lace coating the glass. In a nutshell, this beer was beautiful.

Smell: There was an unmistakably strong odor of whiskey layered over the top of a classic, dark malt porter aroma. A very surprising smell overall. Not what one normally expects from a beer.

Mouthfeel: This brew had a nice, full body and was incredibly smooth. I was very impressed.

Taste: If you are not a whiskey lover, then this might not be the beer for you. Luckily, I sustained myself on Jim Beam and toast for four years while I was in college, so this beer tasted wonderful to me. The flavor of bourbon is very prevalent. In the background is more of a classic porter flavor of deep roasted malts and some hops bitterness. However, the biggest thing that I noticed was the whiskey. This flavor became deeper as the beer warmed up.

I really expected this beer to pick up more charred oak and burnt smoke flavors from the time that it spent in the JD casks. I was not ready for anything close to the amount of bourbon smells and flavors that came through in this beer. A totally unexpected surprise, but it did take away from the drinkability.

An absolutely unique brew for a special day at the River City Brewery. My hat is off to Dan the Brewer for providing this memorable beer.
