Costa Rica is beginning to make it's place in the world of craft beers, and Bri Bri Springs may have one of the most picturesque locations overlooking the Caribbean just outside of Puerto Viejo. The description for this beer claimed that it inspired by Heady Topper, and actually used some base malts that were acquired from this beer. The beer pours a slightly cloudy color with an impressive head that mushrooms out of the top of the glass with dense bubbles. Smell is floral, caramel, tropical fruits, brown sugar, with a rich malty undertone. Flavor is very much the same with a very fresh floral tropical fruit flavor that is well balanced with the malts. It is very balanced in terms of sweet vs. bitter, not extremely dry or thick, pretty much perfect for an IPA that you'd drink in a very humid and hot climate in the Caribbean. Definitely complex without being overly cloying, and maybe a little too sessionable in this climate. At least I had a long bicycle ride back to Manzanillo with my baby daughter slung on my back to keep me straight. Definitely a delicious surprise to find in the land of mass produced lagers. This brewery is a great visit on the Caribbean coast.
