Brewed for Catraio's 1st anniversary January 2016. Served on-draught @ Catraio in Porto. Cost was 2 euro / 25cl nonic.

Black DIPA. 7.50% ABV.

A: Pale khaki colour head. Soft-looking and creamy. Recedes fully within 4 minutes, coating the sides of the glass with lacing as it does so.

Body is a dark ruby-black but not an opaque ink-black. There's a hint of slight translucence about the bottom of the nonic, exposing the deep red hue.

No yeast/less are visible.

Looks pretty standard for a black (D)IPA.

Sm: Grapefruit, rindy bitterness, herbal hop character, pine needles. Pine is dominant - always a good choice in this style. There's noticeable roasty character from the barley. Cream. Robust dark malts.

Aromatic intensity is moderate. I detect no booze nor off-notes.

TASTE & TEXTURE: Oily in texture, emphasizing the high perceived bitterness of the hop notes. Like so many beers in this still nascent style, this is off-balanced, leaning too far to the bitter side of the spectrum. Dark malts do provide some balancing sweetness, but it's ill-enough. Roasted barley is in there, thankfully, but it just adds to the perceived bitterness. Cream. Schwarz malts.

Hop character is diverse, but lacks cohesion and direction. Piney, floral, oily, herbal, resinous. Not my favourite hop profile.

Texture-wise, it's smooth, wet, full-bodied, slick, coating, unrefreshing, and overcarbonated.

OVERALL: More a black IPA than a black IIPA judging by the hop presence and ABV. It's a drinkable brew within a style that isn't terribly common in Portugal, but unfortunately it's little more than that. I wouldn't buy it again, but I'm glad I got to try it and it's better than many Portuguese brews.
