I love a good hefeweizen. The prospect of an imperial version was intriguing and I looked forward to trying this one.

Well...dammit.

I don't know what this is. Whatever hefeweizenesque character has been throttled by a plethora of hop citrus that leaves me wondering...why? Just why?

Why mess with a good thing? And if you do, why not make it more of that good thing?

Hefe, why a plethora?

I like the attempt at an imperial version of the style....but why is this dry hopped? No wonder the taste suffers. I dont want a huge hop profile in this style. I didn't see that until reading the fine print either. I appreciate expirementation but this is just...Meh, it's not hoppy enough for that to stand out but its hoppy enough to muck up the hefeweizen taste.

16 oz can, poured into a weiss glass at 40 degrees F.

L: Pours a cloudy pale straw gold and forms the expected billowy dense white head, with great retention. Carbonation is visible rising in thick streams from the bottom of the glass.

S: Here I experience a bit of trepidation, as this has some distinctly hoppish citrus and floral notes. Small print on the can that I failed to notice earlier indicates it is Mosaic dry-hopped, so I may be in for a disappointing experience.

T: And surprisingly, I am not reacting as I would to an overly hop-forward beer. R. Shea appears to have exercised restraint. This is still heavily floral and bitterly citrus, enough that I can't find any trace of the malt character other than mouthfeel, nor any esters - if they're present, they've been bludgeoned over the head and tied to a chair in the basement by the hops.

F: This is a fluffy and smooth wheat beer.

O: Memo to self - carefully inspect all the small print on cans. I probably wouldn't have picked this up had I noticed the dry hopping. As it stands, I would not repeat this, as it is not at all what I want from a hefe. Hop fan opinions may differ.

Poured from a pint can, the body is a cloudy yellow with fluffy head. Good lacing throughout the tasting.

Nose is traditional Hefeweizen goodness: banana and clove.

The taste veers from tradition. Though banana and clove are present, soon the dry hopped mosaic adds to the mix with its juicy and bubble gum flavor along with a bit of hoppy bitterness. A bit of cracker is also in the mix. The jumble of flavors somehow pulls together into a fun beer. It’s almost like a Hefeweizen with a mosaic IPA boilermaker.

Compared to their standard Hefeweizen, this beer has more banana and clove which meets my approval.

Mouthfeel is good and carbonation very nice.

Canned on 6/23/21. 16oz can poured into a tulip. Pours a pale straw color; some haze; fluffy eggshell white head that fades leaving nice retention and sticky lacing. The aromas have a nice amount of citrus. Some wet grass. Some crackers and fresh bread. Wheat and malts are there. The flavors follow the nose. They're very clean, crisp and refreshing. More citrus coming through, especially lemon. Lots of fresh grass along with some wet and damp grass. More crackers and breads. Moderate to low bitterness. Mild sweetness. Malts and wheat do their thing. Finishes juicy and dry at the same time, but it's probably on the drier side. Alcohol basically goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied with active carbonation. It's sharp, fluffy and smooth.

This is a nice "Imperial Hefeweizen". It stays true to the style. It basically comes of as your classic and traditional example of the style, but slightly amped up. The craftsmanship is on point. Well done.

R. Shea has impressed me with several great offerings. This one is a nice addition to their list of highly interesting brews.

It pours like a well made wheat brew, pale with amazing bubbles. The aroma is fairly clean and not too wheaty. The taste is a little on the strong side - you can tell there are some extra malts, but it does not betray the style. It's a little extra sweet. The finish is strong but not unpleasant. I'm not sure what food this would work with - it is a pretty strong finish by itself, especially for the style.

Recommended. I'm not sure what the availability will be for this brew, but it is a nice upgrade to your not so imperial ones.
