BOTTLE: 33cl. Brown glass. Red unbranded pry-off crown cap. Best before 12/15. Generally appealing label art.

Expectations are average; this is my first beer from Alahovin. Served cold into a mason jar after purchasing at a supermarket in Kuopio, Finland. Reviewed live as a pale ale per the label.

4.70% ABV.

Gushes upon opening, suggesting severe overcarbonation.

HEAD: Occupies ~80% of the glass. White colour. Foamy and frothy, but a bit thin. Takes forever to recede - ~10+ minutes. Leaves no lacing on the sides of the glass as the head recedes.

BODY: Murky dull yellow-copper. No yeast or sediment is visible.

It's not very good-looking for a pale ale. At all.

AROMA: Has some funky off-notes, and some DMS. The yeast character is way off; I suspect infection. Weird green apple and banana. Even a metallic off-note. Hop profile is close to nonexistent, with the generic floral hop character getting imposed upon by all the off-notes.

A pretty awful aroma for a pale ale across the board, with an insufficient hop presence and no detectable malt backbone. I'm concerned.

On the plus side, it seems soft. Aromatic intensity is below average.

TASTE: Sour green apple/DMS, funky infection notes, and generic wheat/light malts. The off-notes completely eclipse the hop character entirely, making this pale ale pretty poorly executed. The malt backbone is lacking as well. A bit grassy, I suppose.

Off flavours run rampant, ruining the beer. Shallow, simple, and poorly built.

TEXTURE: Airy, smooth, wet, slightly metallic with a funky twang, and light-bodied. Unrefreshing, but well-carbonated (in spite of its appearance).

The texture would be pretty good if the off-flavours weren't impacting it.

OVERALL: It's a horrid pale ale, but it's not undrinkable outside of style conventions. This introduction to Alahovin has me unexcited to try their other beers. I definitely wouldn't buy this again. One of the worst expressions of the style I've had this year by far.
