Dark beer brewed with vanilla.
Reviewed below is truncated. Reviewed live from a bottle purchased at a supermarket in Kuopio, Finland, and served cold into a pilsner glass. Best before: 02/16. Expectations are extremely low given that the first three beers I tried from Alahovin were all overcarbonated infected messes.
Here's hoping it won't overflow immediately upon opening...
A: Nope! It didn't overflow. Maybe this is actually going to be a good beer from Alahovin.
Head is white-khaki, with fair creaminess and frothiness but no stand-out characteristics. The only notable thing about it is its above average retention (~7 minutes) - which here seems to suggest overcarbonation more than anything else.
Body is a cola-esque dark brown-black. Nontransparent but quasitranslucent. I see no yeast or sediment.
Sm: Ugh. Artificial vanilla and musty dark malts. Dirty unlively yeast.
Unappealing and uninviting, if not off-putting. Aromatic intensity is moderately high.
T: Artificial vanilla extract. Generic shallow dark malts. Musty yeast.
Horrid balance, painful simplicity. Very uninspired. Why brew this?
Mf: Medium-bodied. Has an odd slight coarseness and dryness, which reduces drinkability and makes it unrefreshing and unquenching.
This texture doesn't elevate the beer as a whole. No harmony of texture and taste.
O: Not only is it not gestalt, it lacks basic cohesion. One of the most shallow dark vanilla beers I've ever had, but still it's better than the other Alahovin beers I've thus far tried. It's not undrinkable; I will finish it - but it leaves a lot to be desired.
