Winter 2010/2011 vintage. Review composed by Wiseman Nick using recent notes.
Poured into a Cigar City snifter.
Appearance: Looked almost flat off the pour; a flash of tiny bubbles surged upward at the very end, proving that there was at least some carbonation. A hair-thin halo hangs around for most of the session, though it's hardly noticeable. Little to no lacing. Brown body displays red and auburn highlights when back-lit, and also boasts excellent clarity.
Smell: Cinnamon and nutmeg overdose! Cardamom, cocoa, and brown malt are also present, but play much subtler roles. Way too spicy.
Taste: Nutmeg, cinnamon, metal, brown malt, and spicy hops. Once again, the nutmeg and cinnamon dominate. Even with the heavy spicing, though, the base beer is easily discernible... and it's not good: think stale, metallic, brown ale. Lousy on a number of fronts. Still drinkable, but certainly not enjoyable.
Mouthfeel: Nearly flat, heavily spiced, and medium-bodied. Finishes dirty, with loads of spice, metal, and cardboard lingering deep into the aftertaste. Borderline palate-wrecking.
Overall: Way over-spiced and poorly crafted. I don't think there's any way of saving this one. Central Coast should start over from scratch.
