a lighter colored amber beer with a lot of depth of flavor to it. these guys do some really cool stuff, even when its basic styles, and this is a fine example of that. not nearly as sweet as most of these are, especially some of the local costa rican red beers, its got a nice toasted nutty richness without the residual sugar, and it has a really cool yeast complexion, loosely english, and giving this another cool layer. a little hazy from the bottle, with an awesome aroma of earthy barley malts, in the medium to light crystal range, but with a lot of character, and the flavor is the same. there are some bittering hops to round it out too, and they taste quite fresh, moderate as they are. a simple beer, but well made, and a little different than what we are used to in the style here in the states. i like the yeast impact here, and what remains of it in the beer. i enjoyed all of the la selva beers, and what they lack in refinement, i think they more than make up for in ambition and honesty. this is quality ale, supremely drinkable. like most of their beers, there is an alcohol variance between the bottle and the website. this says 5.5% abv on the site, but the bottle reads 4.7% abv. what gives with that?
