Collaboration with 8 Wired Brewing.
Souren is named for our pal Søren who runs the show down in the far-off land of New Zealand at 8 Wired Brewery. Taking the long way home after a trip to the States, Søren and his team stopped off in Placentia for a day of brewing, and we created a very California-style sour beer together. Starting with a Belgian-style golden ale base, Pinot Noir grapes were added and the beer was sent to rest in barrels at Bruery Terreux. Over the year, the complexities grew and this grapey, funky, spicy beer was born. Half Kiwi, half American, this one has a rather handsome accent.

Here comes a review of a very strong, very acidic kind of wild ale. Pours an amber color. Doesn't hold much of a head, off white. Just a small film on the top. The aroma was like red wine meets flanders beers. A bit malty, super sour smelling, grapey feels about.
The taste was almost harsh. It was plenty boozy, malty, sour and acidic. Earthy flanders like notes persist. Oak becomes detectable. This isn't really full on beer/wine hybrid territory, its just a flanders like blend with grapes, through the usual Bruery imperialized lens. I didn't care for all the excess here: too boozy, too acidic. Its wild to me this was a Belgian strong/golden ale base, they must have used a good amount of grapes to change the color to this deep amber we get here. But the style explains the booziness and kind of like, the excess I spoke of. Kind of like Sour Monkey in that way, like dude, different base beer please.

A: Poured into a Duvel tulip to a deep orange that's just a little red with a finger and a half of dense off white head that fades quickly leaving minimal lacing
S: Smells of sourness and grapes with some light funk and a hint of oak.
T: Taste is grapes and sourness along with some funk and red berry fruitiness. Slight oak comes in at times as well. Swallow is more grapes, fruitiness, tartness and hints of funk with slight oak.
M: The mouthfeel on this one is about a medium with soft carbonation that is just slightly prickly. The beer has a drying finish from the acidity.
O: Overall this is an interesting one. The grapes and base beer are an interesting blend and they play together well. I'd have to say that I am a fan. If you like your sour beers with a little wine influence this is one to try.
