an absolutely astonishing beer, one of our favorites we had in here, and maybe the best of the non wild stuff for my money, especially surprising after their normal doppelbock was underwhelming, but this is dialed and so unique! traditional maibock aged in rum barrels. pour from the can is a deep honey color with perfect clarity, rich looking without being amber or red at all, and it has an airy inch of lasting white tufty head, lovely. nose is woody and sweet, german and baked and bready and toasty warm, the alcohol is present, i get some almost anise and pepper spiciness too, the oak, a coconut note, some honey sweetness, cut flowers, cream soda, and mellow lager yeast, its all happening! definite grain richness in the flavor but its still uniquely pale, european to me, baked and warming, just a little booze here, and lovely sweetness from the rum that hits like proper cane sugar, so cool with the malt, and the rum seems to have some light spice to it, delicious with the wood thats all through this, vanilla and honey, extra alcohol from the rum too, but mellow and mature to me, and still with a little lager yeast pushing through all this. hints of yellow corn, butterscotch, and caramel to close, radically interesting and very well enhanced by this special barrel treatment. lively carbonation, medium body, wonderful smoothness, one of the cooler bocks i can recall drinking, just delicious!
