1.5 litre plastic bottle purchased at an S-market in Kuopio, Finland.
Style: Kotikalja/Svagdricka.
.90% ABV. 34kcal/100ml.
Served cold into a mason jar. Expectations are below average given the brand (Rainbow).
HEAD:~1 finger wide. Off-white colour. Above average - ~3 minute retention. Leaves no lacing as it recedes.
BODY: Cola-esque opaque brown-black. I see no yeast or sediment.
AROMA: Pumpernickel, dark rye bread, caramel, bread yeast, raisin, still more brown bread. Maybe anise?
In short, it's bready.
I find no overt hops, alcohol, or off-notes.
TASTE: Cola-esque, with a heavy breadiness throughout. I find no yeast character, overt hops, or booze. Dark malts. Some raisin. Caramel. Cream. Maybe some sassafras? It's almost more a kvass than a kotikalja.
TEXTURE: Dire overcarbonation further suggests cola. Acidity seems a bit high. Smooth and wet. Sharp and unrefreshing. Full-bodied.
Not boozy at all.
This mouthfeel is more in line with Coke than with beer, and doesn't support the breadiness of the beer - apart from complementing the filling characteristics of bread.
OVERALL: Drinkable but not worthwhile. I've had better (koti)kalja in Finland - even from other discount brands. Not boozy at all. Far from world class, but a passable discount brew in the style.
