Picked this one up at a Big Red Liquors while passing thru Bedford, IN. I have no idea where St John, Indiana is, but apparently they make Belgian style ales. Saw the bottle on the shelf. I was unimpressed with the labeling, which screamed "yikes, don't buy this." Why, you ask? Because the bottle art had a baseball player on it sliding in to third base, ie..."Triple Threat" and the quote on the label: "If you can't get home, at least get a tripel." Now, this is some weird marketing for a Belgian style ale. I still bought it. The curiosity was killing me. I was shocked they even carried any Belgian style ales in Bedford in the first place. So, it pours a dark golden brown with a tiny little head and limited lacing. Now, that's a bad sign for starters. A tripel should have a sizzling big ol' head... It should almost be difficult to pour without care like a La Fin Du Monde, Orval or a Duvel...etc etc.... I could just pour this one carelessly into the glass and not worry about any head development at all...First sign that this ale wasn't going to have the classic tripel carbonation....And it didn't. In fact, this ale was thin and flat.....Almost no fizz. Too bad. Too bad, because the flavor wasn't bad. The caramel malts are nice, with some fruity apple notes, with a nice yeast smell... There is so much here on the flavor profile that works.... It's almost as if they did everything right but forgot that tripels are carbonated nicely, like champagne... But its not that they just forgot...Since there is almost no carbonation, its like they didn't KNOW it was suppose to be carbonated. This is really unfortunate, because there is some nice things happening here flavor-wise. i think I may write they guys an email and let them know....
