Collaboration beer with Saigoneer. 4.70% ABV American wheat beer.
400ml on-draught @ the brewpub for 95000 VND (~6 times the standard beer price).
APPEARANCE: ~2cm white cap. Frothy, with a nice consistency. Thick lacing coats the sides of the glass as the head recedes, which takes a good 8 minutes.
Body colour is a translucent pale copper. No yeast or lees are visible within; appears filtered.
AROMA: Heavy on the bubblegum phenols. Soft wheat. Floral hop character.
I hoped for more from the hops, and the bubblegum comes on too strong, but I'm optimistic the taste will be better than the aroma. It's pleasant, though.
Aromatic intensity is average.
TASTE & TEXTURE: The bubblegum is rather rampant, edging out the floral hop character for dominance. Pale malts and soft wheat give this its approachable simple taste. Hop selection should be revisited; this hop profile doesn't stand out at all.
Light to medium-bodied, well-carbonated, smooth, wet, soft, and clean on the palate. Could be softer and I'd like to see the carbonation reduced a bit. An oily feel would work here too if they used more resinous hops.
OVERALL: It's nice considering its country of origin, and like all Pasteur Street beers I've tried, it's very drinkable. But it can't hold a candle to the best expressions of the style, and discerning drinkers won't find it compares favorably to widely distributed examples (e.g. Lagunitas').
