An old ale in Vietnam? Hey, alright.
25 IBU. 7.50% ABV. Served on-draught @ Bia Craft in Ho Chi Minh City. Cost was 120000 VND per 300ml pour.
APPEARANCE: Pale khaki head crumbles quickly under the weight of that 7.50% ABV, disappearing inside of 30 seconds.
Body is a deep dark brown not dissimilar to the colour and look of cola. Nontransparent.
AROMA: Quite faint, actually. All I pick up on is some chocolate malt and dark malt sweetness. Maybe some caramel if I really dig, but no toasted malt, marshmallow, oxidation, leather, tobacco, or other intricacies one might find in a great old ale.
Aromatic intensity is rather low. This suggests a reticent brew that lacks full expressive flavours.
TASTE & TEXTURE: Chocolate malt. Dark malt sweetness/schwarz malt. Crystal malt. That's really it; it's a simple reticent brew as indicated by the aroma.
No esters or phenols or spice from the ale yeast.
No off-flavours. No oxidation.
None of the abovementioned notes you might expect in a good old ale.
Texture-wise, it's full-bodied, with ample heft and weight on the palate. High thickness. Very filling. Smooth, wet, unrefreshing. Akin to cola in terms of acidity.
Overall, it's unfortunately a shrug of an old ale. Very plain and one-dimensional. Barely meets style conventions. I hoped for better given Pasteur Street is behind it. I guess technically it's the best old ale in Vietnam (since it's the only one), but this is a rare dud from Vietnam's best brewery. Not horribly drinkable either, given its thick mouthfeel and high alcohol.
