The Salm Braeu Märzen was originally the typical beer from Vienna. The red colour was significant for this type of beer, which has been taken to Munich later to be brewed as the Octoberfestbeer. It has a clearly more malt character, has a significant stronger full body nature and has less hops. Especially women, who don´t like the bitterness of stronger hoped beers, prefer this type and find their way to the enjoyment of full tasting beers. Even in these days, this beer type is known in the US as the "Vienna Red". It is brewed with the double decoction process (double mash process), needs 7 days for primary fermentation and 21 days for secondary fermentation.

Had on tap. Copper clear body, big off-white head. Sweet caramel malts with some mild bread. Taste is the same, maybe some earthy hop kiss as it warms, but it is simple. Feel is malty and light, doesn't break down but yeast depth simply isn't there. Not offensive but nothing to seek out either

On tap into a dimpled beer mug
A - Ever so slightly cloudy orangish amber in color with light carbonation rising slowly towards the surface. Not much of a head, with the head that is present being white in color and foamy. Head dissipates to a very thin, almost non-existent, lacing very quickly. 3.5/5
S - Typical Marzen aroma of sweet caramel maltiness along with what seems like Noble hops. Ever so slight grass note, but very heavy on the sweet malt. 4/5
T - Sweet caramel maltiness up front which transitions to a light yeasty breadiness in the middle of the tasting with the sweetness being retained. Hops are more pronounced than usual for a Marzen on the back end and leaves a combination sweet and bitter aftertaste upon swallowing. Aftertaste does not linger very long. 3.75/5
M - Smooth and medium bodied. Light carbonation that tickles more than burns. Upon swallowing leaves the mouth nice and wet, not drying. 4/5
O - Good Marzen offering here. A bit more hoppy than usual for a Marzen but still nice and sweet like a Marzen should be. Great with food and nice on a cooler day. Sweetness came out more as the beer warmed. Warming also brought out a smooth and creamier mouthfeel as well. 3.75/5

Sampled at the brewpub, it came out a cloudy amber gold under a two finger off-white head that was very creamy and settled perhaps a touch too quickly. Nice lace rings nonetheless. Sweet, almost fruity malt nose. The mouth was light and fairly well-carbonated. Fairly non-descript flavor, unfortunately. There is a hint of caramel in the malt, and a slightly bitter bite from the hops. Although it really wasn't too cold when it arrived, it still got better as it warmed, as the caramel and the hops both emerged. Still, it comes across as weak. OK, but weak.
