Brown glass bottle with appealing label and unbranded silver pry-off pressure cap purchased from the brewery's beer vending machine (minimum age 16...purportedly) for just under 4 euro and served into a Wieden Brau bierkrug in me friend's gaff in Vienna, Austria. Reviewed live. Expectations are fairly high given the brewery, whose Rauchbier I loved. Served cold and side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

From the bottle: "Imhalt .5L." "Stammwürze: 14.8 degrees." 4.7% ABV. BB: 10.07.18.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: One finger wide head of white colour. Disappointingly thin. Lacks creaminess and frothiness. Recedes within 2 minutes, leaving no lacing on the sides of the glass.

BODY: Clear translucent yellow which turns a lime-green when backlit. Odd, but intriguing. Clean; no yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible. Below average vibrance.

Appears decently carbonated. Far from special but the colour is interesting. It has my attention.

AROMA: Pepper skin, spicy chilis, pepper oil, clean barley, pils malts. It's distinctly peppery, and the aroma doesn't invade the nostrils. The heat seems pretty tame, actually, but then being from Colorado I'm accustomed to Twisted Pine's offerings.

No yeast character, alcohol, off-notes, or hop notes are detectable. Overall, it's a pleasant aroma of mild strength.

TASTE: Definitely has chili peppers. There's ample heat, but it doesn't force one to immediately search for milk or water. I'm pretty middle-of-the-road when it comes to American heat tolerance, and I'm sipping on this without too much issue. It does burn a bit in the throat, but doesn't irritate. I suppose pils malts provide the body, but they get lost beneath the fiery heat. It's maybe a 6/10 in terms of American spiciness, or a 3/10 in terms of Thai spiciness. I don't require food or other liquid. It's not tame, but it's surprisingly approachable for a chili beer. The duration of flavour is fantastic; one sip will last you a good 3 minutes. Pretty high intensity of flavour. Average depth of flavour for the style.

As with most beers in the style, the focus is squarely on the chili heat, so it's tough to say it's complex or intricate - and it sure as shit isn't subtle. I think it's fair to say this is a balanced beer. The heat and chili pepper skin work well together given the beer's aims, and I do like it for what it is. I'm sure this will have its detractors and its fans. I'd count myself in the latter category.

TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, light to medium bodied, aptly thick, and aptly hard (in terms of water chemistry). It's well-carbonated and has a good overall presence on the palate. This texture complements the taste well. Good execution here,

Not oily, gushed, hot (alcohol-wise), boozy, astringent, harsh, scratchy, or rough.

OVERALL: I admit I had some undue skepticism regarding this beer because of its country of origin. I didn't think an Austrian chili beer would really commit to the heat, but this holds its own with American examples of the style (though the heat is not intense as in some of the ghost pepper brews out there). I'd definitely recommend it to fans of the style, and while it's absolutely a sipper I do think it's drinkable for what it is. I'll happily finish the whole bottle, albeit over the course of due time. Well worth trying, and hardcore fans of the style won't be disappointed if they seek it out. This is exactly what a chili beer promises to be.

A chili beer will probably turn off most beer drinkers with higher standards, but they shouldn't turn away from this one so quickly.

Its a lighter golden colored lager with a head that shows additional CO2 was only used sparingly in the tap system. The head is fairly long lasting for so an acidic brew. The chili flavor makes itself known in the aroma, but it comes through more as a strong black pepper aroma. Flavor doesn't burn. It tickles. This beer would have unendless potential with a curry. It is a bit spicy though. If you don't like spicy food, stay away. If you like buffalo wings, you're going to enjoy this. Its a mild spiciness, but a spiciness all the same. As the menu suggests, it cools in the summer and warms in the winter. I had two. Something interesting is in this beer, I just lack the words to pin it down. Mouthfeel is standard of a well crafted lager and drinkability, relative to the chillies, is quite good.

When no IPA is available and you're looking for a bit of spice, its spot-on.
