Color has a predictable body of deep mahoghany brown, but a unique ruby hue. Lacing is moderate. Head, patchy and foamy is long lasting. Aroma is only mildy smoky. Infact, smoked characteristics of this brew are overall fairly mild. A smooth slightly sweet flavor dominates. I thought I got a little diacteyl out of it as well, but it played well with the other flavors...added a slight butterscotch caramel to play. Some flavors of dried cherries in there too. Nice as it is, but could be outstanding and much more unique with some more smoked character to it.

Sampled at the brewpub. Comes out a cloudy dark caramel brown under a 1.5 finger beige head that is very creamy, with few bubbles. The head lingers luxuriously long and leaves fantastic lace rings and strings. The nose is a bit too subdued, with a few caramel notes and the very slightest hint of smoke. It does get better as the brew warms, but is never really enticing. The mouth is thick and heavy, with a very mild carbonation - really something to chew on. The taste is only mildly smokey, with sweet caramel malt in the opening and a reserved bitter hop background. Very nicely balanced, with the smoke restrainng both the sweet and the bitter. I don't normally like Rauchbiere, but this is a sublime concoction - a very nice winter warmer. Please, sir, may I have another?
