Wieden Bräu

I gave Wieden Bräu a visit yesterday and it was a pretty decent place. It’s pretty big inside, but it’s divided up into rooms so it still feels welcoming. There’s breweriana up on the walls and the bright copper brewhouse is right there next to the bar, which I always love to see!

They had 6 of their beers on tap while I was there: helles, Märzen, IPA, dunkel, weizen, and a radler. The helles was really good, the dunkel decent, and the weizen so-so. They’ve got a kitchen and full menu, although I didn’t eat on this particular visit. Initially it took them a while to acknowledge me and bring me a beer, but the second and third beers came along promptly, and I had a nice conversation with the guy as I was leaving.

Overall Wieden is a decent place, and it’s pretty easy to get to from the city center on public transit, so I think it’s worth a stop if you are bumming around Vienna.

Stopped here one night for beers and dinner. The inside has a modern almost Scandinavian décor/vibe. It is light and airy and outside of a few questionable design elements (blue electric wires to the light fixtures for one..) it is an attractive spot.

There are at least three rooms including the bar area. There is a decent beer garden out back.

The service was a bit slow, but the food was worth the wait.

They had 5 house beers on tap. One was an IPA and the rest were traditional styles. They also had a couple of their beers available in bottles. Stick with the traditional styles as I though they were superior.

I bumped into the brewer who gave me a quick tour and filled me on their weekend entertainment in the beer garden.

All-in-all, a pleasant stop and I would go back for another visit.

 

 

A lot of people here in Vienna seem to enjoy the Wieden Bräu, but it is one of our least favorite brewpubs. They have a small selection of unimpressive Austrian beers, and we've also been fairly unhappy with the quality of the food. We have only been in the winter, so we can't comment on the garden, but the inside of the bar was very full of people. We couldn't get a seat in the nonsmoking section unless we wanted to wait a long time. I guess it is a popular place for some reason.

Went here on quest to visit all brewpubs in wien. Visted on a wensday aroung 3. The place was empty. some inside seating as well as a beir garden outside. we were quite surprised to find it was happy hour (from 2-4) in which a mass cost only 3.20 euro (this made me come back for more visits especaiily on a fixed account) The hefe (a seasonal) was quite good, while the helles is top noth. did not order any food, and servie was quite slow. This is not quite as good as 1516/sieben, but it still a good stop.

We sat outside in their garden which, in even consideration of the rainstorms Vienna has expereinced the past week was not well maintained. I mean, its the end of June. There shouldnt be dried up leaves left around from the previous Fall. Also, being in the courtyard of Grey Plattenbauwohnungen (grey flat building apartments) doesn't help the atmosphere.

Selection was typical...A dunkels, a helles, a märzen and a hefe.

Although it was 2pm on a saturday no body in the garden, ca. 12 people were eating. Not the best sign.

Service was attentive and friendly. I think they were actually pretty bored as it seemd to be a slow afternoon with the Donauinselfest going on.

I had lunch and beers in this brewpub in May 2008.
The first thing I noticed when I entered were the copper brewing kettles located on the left hand side. These were being polished with tender loving care by two of the staff. The fact that the copperware seemed already spotless before this attention meant that they were absolutely gleaming when the cleaning was complete.

This was a good sign for me. They also had an English menu, but here is a tip; always get the German menu as well. There are 3 reasons for this. Firstly, you will never learn how to interpret German-only menus without trying to translate. Secondly, they sometimes translate "bratwurst" or "weisswurst" as sinply "sausage" - not much use! Thirdly (and strangely), some items don't seem to appear on the English menu that are clearly on the German menu. This does not necessarily apply to WeidenBrau, but in general.

Anyway; I had Helles and Dunkles with my excellent meal, and I have to say that the Helles was about the best Helles I have ever tasted; right on the button!

Located just southeast of the center but within walking distance of the ring, Wiedenbräu sits on a corner one small block off of a major street with tram lines (62 and 65). Enter at the corner, with the main room stretching off to the right. The bar is on the left side of this long and fairly narrow room, which is divided by a half wall in the middle. White plaster walls and (high) ceilings, tile floor, wood furniture. Another small room goes off just to the left of the bar and past the brewkettles on the left. The bathrooms are behind the bar and pretty primitive. Signs indicate there is garden seating somewhere in the back. The place was about half full at 12:30 on a Friday afternoon.

Five beers on tap: Helles, Märzen, G'Mischtes and Hanfbier (with hemp) are the regulars. The seasonal when I was there was a Munich Dunkles. The brews were solid, served at the right temperature in logo glassware and in good shape. Overall, a nice place a bit off the beaten path but worth seeking out. I'll be back.
