Stoney Creek Double Chocolate Ale

A solid and very good offering from Stoney Creek. Pours out to a nice, black color in the glass. The aroma is of roasted malt, chocolate and coffee. The taste was very enjoyable, with the chocolate taste coming through without being too weak or overpowering. Surprisingly drinkable.

Poured a rich black with ruby highlights. The head dissipated very quickly to become a thin ring with no lacing. Smell consists of coffee, choclate, dark fruit and toffee. The toffee aroma is the strongest..

Taste is sweet at first but the bitter coffee flavor quickly takes over. I am disapointed that the chocolate flavor is not more pronounced. I find the mouthfeel to be rather thin. I would prefer more of a 'creaminess'.



This beer is drinkable, but not robust enough for me to seek out. I feel that this beer is ok, but it could have been something special if they would have kicked it up a notch. It's just not 'stouty' enough.

Pours a dark brown with ruby highlights. Loose light beige head settles to 1/2". Good lacing.

Fresh creamy milk chocolate flavors mixed with fruity notes. Fresh bread and butter scents also.

Roasted chocolaty malt flavors appear immediately while the tame hops stick their head out slightly, then the cocoa flavors bring up the rear - nice sequence of flavors actually.

Mouthfeel is a tad thin and light-medium bodied. Carbonation is lighter than I expected, maybe that's why the mouthfeel seems a bit limp.

Drinkability is good. Lighter body and lower carbonation levels make this an easy swillin' brew if you dig the flavors.

Overall a good beer with a great nose. I'm sure there are people who will love this ale; I'm just not swinging that direction. I can't knock it for any particular reason; I wish I liked it more.

Pours a clear dark reddish-black, small brown fizzy head that doesn't last long, not much lacing either, aroma of dark chocolate and coffee. Medium bodied with a soft and creamy mouthfeel. Smokey coffee and chocolate flavors, finishes a bit sweet, an average stout that is worth a try.

Poured a dark brown color with just a touch of head.

Smells of tons of roasted malts and bitter chocolate.

Taste is very smooth and mellow, heavy dark roasted malts mixing well with the chocolate flavor. Not all sweet, yet barely any bitterness either.

Mouthfeel is creamy and good.

Drinkability is good on this solid Chocolate stout.

Pours deep brown with a tan head (about 1.5 fingers). Lacing and retention are okay.
Smell is roasted malt, very chocolately, some sweet caramel malts. Not much else in the way of smell. Very sweet smelling.
Chocolate, roasted malts, caramel, very slight hop bitterness amounts for the bulk of the taste.
Mouthfeel is okay, a little too oily, but not terrible.
Overall, an okay beer. Not something that I would pass up if handed to me, but not something I would actively seek out either.

The beer pours opaque black, with mahogany and ruby highlights and a low persistent off white head.

The aroma yields some buttery diacetyl, which gives way to deep toffee and dark fruit aromas. Some coffee and dark chocolate aromas emerge as the beer warms.

The flavor starts quite sweet at the sip. The sweet maltiness quickly gives way to smoky complexity It is a bit warming and crisp at the swallow. The chocolate is ascertainable, but not by any means dominant in the flavor.

This beer could be fuller and a bit more flavorful. It is tasty, but unamazing. The sample showed little chocolate aroma or flavor.

Thanks to kmpitz2 for sharing this one. Pours a dark brown with a small head that dies off fast and doesn't leave much lacing on the glass. The aroma is mostly comprised of a roasty chocolate. Nothing much else, but enjoyable. The flavor is full of chocolate, but it has a crispness that I don't like. I want this type of beer to have a full body that is somewhat creamy. This one has none of that. Very thin body. Good beer, but they need to throw some dextrin malts in there.

This beer came from my in-laws. It pours a dark brown color with a finger of head that falls to ring the beer. The nose lets you know this is a chocolate beer. There is chocolate and also a toasted nut aroma as well. The flavor is nice and chocolatey, but the body is nowhere to be found. I want this one to be thick and creamy. The drinkability is okay. I think it suffers from the lack of body overall. This one had potential to be very nice, but it comes a bit short.

New Review: I don't know if they changed the recipe or my palate has simply changed, but this has improved enormously in my mind. Deeper, more roasted flavors. Really blends with a more subtle chocolate flavor than I remember. A much more robust ale and, really, much more like a roasted, chocolate version of their excellent vanilla porter. Big bump from me.

Original 02-17-03: It's kind of an odd combo. It's not full enough to fall into the stout/porter category at all, but it's certainly a dark ale -- and it's chocolate flavored. Very little bitterness. I've had it a few times, and I can never decided how much I like it or dislike it. This beer would benefit greatly from a little more roasty or hop flavor or something else to kind of kick the chocolate flavor back just a tiny bit. I'm thinking they wanted to be unique and do a chocolate dark ale instead of a full-blown porter or stout like most folks do. In this case, I think they would have been better served sticking with tradition. But it's reasonably tasty if you like chocolate-flavored beers.
