Mohren Spezial is a classic Vorarlberg lager. This brew evolved back in the 90's as a combination of what Mohren called Spezial that had a higher Stammwurze and the Laendle that came in with a lower Stammwurze. The beer they came up with was Mohren Spezial but at a lower Stammwurze than the original. As I understand it this was done for taxing reasons imposed by the EU that taxed more heavily brews with higher malt content.
It pours clear and holds a fine head of foam that lasts with a clean glass. This beer is a sipping brew rather than a beer to be quaffed like a Bavarian Helles. Served too cold and it really bites the back of your throat. There is some hop bite that keeps it crisp. Hop aroma present I think is Tettnanger. At 5.6 this is a fairly strong lager as compared with a Bavarian Helles. Worth seeking out in Western Austria, along with Egger, Fohrenburg, and Frastanzer. All make light lager in this style.

I am fortunate to get this beer fresh from Austria a few times per year. It has a nice white foamy head, dark straw color and represents a typical European Lager. When served very cold this is a very refreshing beer. Nothing fancy and I have tasted the Mohren Export which has little more grain. This beer finishes clean with a good hop spicyness that one might expect from a beer from Vienna. Cheers,
Joe

Clean and limpid, straw-colored. Abundant head, not too compact.
The smell is quite strong and characterized, with a good malt, unrefined, from cereals. Not very clean, anyway.
Malty taste, too, full, but even in somewhat a little heavy. Taste of cereals in the mouth too.
More light aftertaste; some herbal notes in it, too.
Medium-light in body.
