Sampling a cold 32 oz crowler of this brew picked up straight at the brewery. My can says 10.1% not the 9.4% listed below
The beer pours a dark brown color with almost no light passing through the glass. A dense creamy tan head of 3 cm foams up with even the gentle pour. The foam fades slowly to a sturdy surface layer that lingers throughout the sampling event.
The aroma is some roasted malt and dark chocolate notes. There is a little bit of sweet chocolate and vanilla hints blended in as well. there are no hints of the hops and I actually dont find any ABV hints like peppery spice or booziness. Surprising for a bigger beer.
The first sip reveals an average body with a smooth texture and minimal yet prickly carbonation. The physical traits are good, but even a little more thickness would be a booster for this big stout.
Flavor is what the nose advertises, I dont get any hops here either and the booze is hidden. I get a bit hit of roasted malt and almost charred notes with some deep coffee grounds. There is bitterness, but it is black coffee bitter and not from hops. I get dark cocoa here, but no sweetness in the chocolate profile. The bitterness lingers and dries out my palate, the bite hurts the drinkability a little, but the booze is very well hidden. A nice Imp stout that is worth trying, bump up the body and it only gets better.
