33cl brown glass bottle served into a shaker pint @ Pikkulintu in Helsinki, Finland.
5.70% ABV. Reviewed from notes.
HEAD: ~1.5 inches wide. White colour. Nice thickness, foaminess, and frothiness. Uneven lacing sticks to the sides of the glass as it recedes. Retention is quite good - ~6-8 minutes.
BODY: Clear copper colour of nice vibrance with gold and orange hues. Clear and clean, with no visible yeast or sediment.
Appealing and inviting, if a bit unremarkable within its style.
AROMA: Honey-like sweetness, pale malts, clean barley. Has a somewhat stale pale malt presence, with aged fruity hops and musty floral notes lending it an old feel. Not too hoppy, but still bitter. Hints of herbal notes and spices.
Suggests an interesting brew. Aromatic intensity is average.
TASTE: Almost unique. Pale malts mix seamlessly with aged hops redolent of herb, floral notes, and almost gruit-like spice. Hints of twangy lemongrass, flowers, and a kiss of dry juniper berry. Rustic but balanced, with neither too much sweetness nor too much bitterness. Complex, with ample ale yeast esters. Intricacy emerges from its many intangibles. I quite like it for what it is, but it's admittedly an odd brew.
TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, medium-bodied, overcarbonated, refreshing, and aptly weighty on the palate, with moderate heft and thickness. Complements the taste nicely, supporting the flavours but not quite accentuating them or elevating the beer as a whole.
OVERALL: A complex ale for its ABV with unique characteristics. Rousal Ale is well worth trying and I find it highly drinkable. Tasty stuff, and I'd put it at least in the top half of all Finnish beers.
