Copenhagen 22/4 2023. 50 cl bottle with swing cap from Rewe, Flenburger Markt, Flensburg. Light blue retro label with a monk holding a goblet with beer and a table with happy beer drinkers.
Pours unclear, golden yellow with a big white head. Stable. Settles as thin but unbroken layer of foam covering the surface of the beer. Crawling up the sides of the glass. Substantial lacing.
Aroma is medium intense with a sweet, malty odor mingling with hints of toasted bread and toffee. Sweet pale malts, caramel, light roast and bread.
Low carbonation. Slightly thick, oily, soft, almost flat texture.
Flavor is medium intense with a medium strong sweetness followed by a moderately strong bitterness. Aftertaste is bitter with a distinct sweet undertone Lingers for a bit. Finish is sweet and sloppy.
Run of the mill sweet Zwickelbier.

Always up for a new Zwickel, so I snagged a 0,5L bottle dated best by 16.10.24 at the Edeka here in town. Not as cloudy as I had hoped, it still has great color. Yeasty and barny like a good Zwickel should be. Rich, smooth, malty goodness. Not true finest example but quite tasty and spot-on for the style. I used to ignore this brewery when I see bottles/cases at stores, but I’m starting to respect their offerings.
