a huge but gorgeous beer, an unexpected treat when i visited the brewery. this was one of the only beers that was new to me here, and i was stoked to see it. apparently the base is an older vintage of their coming home ale, but then aged in gin barrels and obviously having picked up some strength. the color is a rich mahogany and there is a surprisingly liveliness to the head, tan and fizzy and with decent retention for what this is. doesnt look quite as dense and viscous as i thought it might, now sticky and leggy, but pretty in the glass. aroma and flavor are really neat on this, lots of gin sure, but lots of neat great layers too, and they are surprisingly compatible, even though i feel like barleywine in gin barrels remains kind of rare. as much oak as there is juniper on it, notes of vanilla, cola, and even earthy leather. the botanical element is somewhat restrained, its obviously gin, but its not over the top, and there is nice balance with the malt. i somehow get some lasting hops in here, a flash of lime, muddled cherry, molasses, maple, fig, and unlit cigar, really pretty complex. the crazy thing is that its not all that boozy for what it is, maybe a little warm in the throat when i swallow it, but this isnt as intense as expected for its strength, obviously mellowed by the gin and likely even more by time. no oxidation at all though, and this feels professional and intentional rather than fortuitous. smooth to drink, curiously autumnal for the gin, not a usual association i make with it, but the breadiness of the grain and all the wood take it there. really enjoyable sipper right there on the patio of this fine brewery. what an awesome experience!
