Tail Waggin’ Double White Ale is brewed in the Belgian tradition, using malted barley, wheat malt, candi sugar and a unique touch— unmalted rye. Noble-type hops are used for balanced bitterness, with spices added in the whirlpool. We followed the Belgian tradition of using bitter orange peel and coriander, then added a bit of lemongrass to make our wit something special. Finally, we fermented the beer with a Belgian witbier yeast that adds its own complexity with spicy phenols and fruity esters.

Our wit pours a very hazy golden straw color, with a thin white head that clings to the glass. The aroma is very complex, showcasing notes of lemon, coriander, bubblegum and banana. The first sip tickles the tongue with a black pepper spiciness, which subsides into more mellow flavors of tart citrus fruits. A very effervescent mouthfeel leads to a crisp finish, making this the perfect beer for a warm afternoon.

This was a four year old bottle since it was last brewed in 2010. I thought it was a very good summer beer. I think the flavor held up very well for the aging on this. The spices still shown through very well but weren't overpowering, which I think might have been a little too strong when fresh. Overall I think this beer held up very nicely over the years of aging.

Appearance: Pours a hazy golden/honey color with a modest head that fritters away rather quickly leaving just a few squiggles of lacing behind

Smell: Tangerine, Juicy Fruit gum, banana, coriander, cracked wheat and citrus peel

Taste: Very sweet, up front, with the candi sugar and Juicy Fruit gum flavors setting the tone; by mid-palate, the spice flavors intercede, bringing some white pepper and coriander to the profile; the citrus peel also arrives in the middle, adding another dimension that lingers into the finish

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with moderate carbonation; a bit clunky for the style

Overall: Despite the complex range of flavors, the beer is overly sweet (perhaps it is the age, with the bitter flavors mellowing more quickly) and I would not want to drink a lot of this at one sitting

Poured into a New Belgium globe. The beer is a murky, hazy straw yellow. A white head sits atop but dissipates to a wisp. Light sticky lacing exists. The beer smells amazing! A slightly peppery aroma hits first, then bubblegum and floral notes abound. The taste is also very, very impressive. Like the smell, black pepper is up front, but soon followed by a sweet bubblegum array and subtle floral and fruit notes (bananas come to mind). The mouthfeel is very, very smooth. A well-balanced medium body.

Overall, I'm impressed. This beer is delicious to all the senses. Well-balanced and easily drinkable, which is scary with 7.2% ABV. A person could get in trouble with this one I imagine.

Thanks to tolann for sharing this one with us a while back, especially since the dog hank popped up on the label. poured a hazy gold with a lasting white head. Aromas of wheat, yeast, light orange zest and light coriander. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of wheat, yeast, orange zest and light coriander with a smooth lingering yeasty finish.

Bought a 1PINT 9.4FLUID OUNCE bottle of this from Lukas Liquor in Ellisville, MO for $7.99. Poured from the Bottle, Cap stickered with a blue/gold ribbon and has mountains on the top and a 2010 Cellar Reserve Date on it, into my Mizzou Pilsner glass. No Bottled on Date.

Aroma- Starts with a hint of honey and good sweetness. Light floral hops and a mild spiciness follow but not overpowering. Nice and refreshing smell.

Appearance- Cool appearance! Starts with a huge 4 finger head that keeps for a good amount of time and then has a pale straw color body that has a white glow to it. Huge carbonation bubbles are present and head leaves nice lacing behind.

Flavor- Nice sweetness at the beginning of the drink with citrus hops. Low spiciness all the way through and has a nice finish of orange peel and wheat.

Mouthfeel- Light Bodied, High Carbonation, Creamy, and then has a VERY Mild tart finish.

Overall Impression- Why did they call this a DOUBLE white ale? Its almost a perfect WitBier and with this name, may scare people off or confuse them. AWESOME beer either way but wish they didn't have this Double name in front of it. Easy to drink and am very glad/lucky I found this (since it was a 2010 Reserve).

Double witbier, not witbier.

Pours hazy golden with thin white head. Nose has a huge coriander element and candied, almost like a coriander creamsicle. Palate brings forth some of the candy sugar, more coriander, and the wheat/rye balances nicely. Easy drinking for a double witbier.

Poured into a heff glass at 45 degrees.

Appearance: A poor foamy and bubbly white that has very poor retention. The color of the beer is a pale orange color with light orange tan hues. . The clarity of the beer is hazy, cloudy, and yeasty. The head left no lacing on the glass, a very poor showing.

Nose: Rich citrus, lemons and orange followed by wheat and alcohol. The malt is light and toasty with yeast and diacetyls. In the background of the beer there is a subtle note phenols.

Taste: A nice citrus flavor followed by floral, and wheat. The beer's other flavors are lightly toasted malt, yeast, diacetyls, and touch of phenols.

The mouth feel of the beer carbonated, crisp, and warm.

Overall: The body of the beer is medium and the finish is medium. This beer is good but I know Grand Teton makes better brews. I think that this fell just a touch short

It's a good night for a double white. 750 ml capped bottle purchased in Visalia for $8.69, 2010 vintage. On to the beer:

Depending on the lighting in the room, it will range from the traditional witbier color to the color of Gatorade Orange. Creamy head retention and stick to the glass add an extra aesthetic to the appearance. The nose brings a lot of inntensity; pears soaked in corn syrup and a hint of orange come to mind. "Strong subtle", if that's want you want to call it. Somewhat boozy at times.

Double whites are a tough one to rate. I'm teased into believing that they should be refreshing and drinkable, and Tail Waggin' may be the epitome of the condundrum. It's not in your face, subtle enough to be drinkable, but intense enough that I must drink with care. "Orchard flavors", like canned pear and orange, provide the base flavor. I occasionally spot hops underneath. A tiny boozy. Its body is on the meaty side.

Taken together, this is a witbier with big things. The flavor in this beer would certainly wag my tail if I had one, though preferably in smaller quantities. This is not something I could do often.
