A strong Berliner Weisse fermented with Bavarian Hefeweizen yeast in the primary and Lactobacillus in the secondary for 6 months. Aged 7 months in a used French oak Syrah barrel.

$10 for a chub tonight from Brewforia Eagle... I guess that is a pretty good deal.
Syrah French Oak barrel aged version of the regular Snarling Badger. The keg tag says 7.55%.
Poured into my HotD goblet the brew is hazed light orange with a decent white head and okay lacing.
The nose is a bit vinous with the more traditional lactic Berliner character shining through.. Pear esters and minor clovey phenols are way too high surprisingly.
Flavor is a bit better than the aroma... decent lactic qualities and lesser lemon notes.. the barrel is stronger but IMO magnifies tart apple and underripe pear esters... the only yeasty phenol notes I get might be white peppercorns, but that could easily be in my imagination. The barrel presence really grows with warmth.. definite red wine barrel qualities add complexities but still doesn't get the job done.
The body is entirely too thick for anything resembling a Berliner, but I get what GT was going after.. This brew would be given a pass with a much longer fermentation and a drier body.
I dig it.. but it fails in the ABV and body... too much of a good thing does not always equal a better product.
