A lovely, fruity sour beer that has a soft mouth feel as there is very little carbonation. Unfiltered with a significant mast of fruit pulp and yeast at the bottom of the glass. A lovely brownish-cherry color, this beer glows in hazy glory when put near a light source.
Flavor is a delicate balance of tart and fruit. The fragrance is slightly floral and yeasty. It is made with plums, cherries and brown sugar and I am sure that they use real fruit juice and pulp to make it because there is no weird aftertaste or chemical-ness to the flavor profile. It is tart without being obnoxious, yet it is not an overly sweet beer (a fault I find in some sours). It has an excellent balance. It drinks very well, either by itself or with a meal (salad, cheese and crackers, fish, chicken, turkey, etc come to mind... lighter fare). I find it gets getter as it warms up some. While I might enjoy this cold in the summer, in November/December, it tastes best to me about 55•F
ABV is 8% but this doesn't hit you over the head with alcohol in your nose. I was surprised that the ABV was as high as it was when drinking it.
On the label:
"Sugar Plum is a live culture sour beer aged on fresh plums and cherries, then conditioned with brown sugar. Be whisked away while you dance in the land of sweets and sours. Can conditioned. 2020."
I've now had three different sours from this brewery and none have disappointed. 405 Brewing Co. is definitely on my radar map to watch for good sours! All have been excellent.
