On tap at Dewey Beer Co, DE.
Pours a mostly black color with a hint of mahogany. A moderate tan foam head retains well.
The raspberry adjuncts create nice fresh fruity aromatics. Yet, the secondary but bold aromas of roasted malt, coffee and dark cocoa remind you that it is still a Stout. A touch of minty hops adds another element of complexity to the nose.
The taste is mostly focused on the raspberry flavors. The raspberry imparts fruity and lightly tart flavors, while the sugar evokes a sort of raspberry cola feel. This adjunct nearly threatens to overwhelm what is supposed to be the base style of Stout. However, the emergence of dark caramel and milk chocolate flavors begin to evoke a sort of raspberry flavor tootsie pop as the name implies. Furthermore, towards the final third of the drink, a roasty, dark chocolate and espresso bean flavor adds a much needed touch of bitterness, along with developing flavors of grassy and minty hops.
Full bodied, however, its closeness to high medium aids a good drinkability. Lively carbonation throughout adds a soda like crispness along with the generally smooth mouthfeel. The finish, at first fruity and long, becomes increasingly roasty, bitter and dry.
This one grew on me as the Stout flavors opened up. Interesting use of raspberry.
