From the can, it pours a lovely golden color with a touch of amber. Mostly clear and with visible carbonation, a moderately large foam head quickly dissipates, leaving a bubbly film and lacing.
The nose is truly evocative of a classic West Coast IPA in how it highlights citrusy hops aromas. There are sweet notes of candied orange, grapefruit, tangerine and a touch of lemon. There is also a hint of stone fruit aroma as well as pine.
The taste is very citrusy with juicy notes of grapefruit pulp and orange and tangerine zest. It kind of reminds me at first of Ballast Point Sculpin but with a smoother mouthfeel. This is because I feel that in the 1st phase of the brew I’m getting more of the juicy notes balanced by a hops bitterness that is more easy going, less abrasive and less herbal as compared to WC IPAs of the past. Amidst the smooth mouthfeel is a medium body with a moderately gentle carbonation that feels just right. The cracker malt profile is mostly overshadowed by the hops, however, it provides a solid base. Midway, some piney, lightly peppery and earthy hops spice add another layer to the complexion of this drink. The finish is dry with a resiny hops linger.
Totally crushable and a pleasure to return to the type of IPA that made me fall in love with the style. One of my favorite ever brews from Dewey Beer Company.
