Notes via stream of consciousness: This is a double IPA at 9% ABV brewed with Citra, Nelson Sauvin, and Hallertau Blanc hops - bring on the gooseberry! It's poured a murky golden body beneath a finger's width of white foam. The aroma is sweetish and fruity with malt, notes of tropical fruit, and a touch of hop resin. It's not particularly bright for an IPA, or what appears to be a New England-style IPA in this case, but it's clear. I can't, however, pick out any specific fruits. On to the taste then... what it may lack in aroma it more than makes up for in flavor! The gooseberry I expected is there along with pineapple, passion fruit, lychee, white grape, soft pine, mandarin orange, and pomelo. The malt is sweet and somewhat oaty, and there's not a lot of bitterness to it at all but some acidic "hop burn", resins, soft pine, and alcohol help to dry it in the finish. I get the alcohol but I don't consider it "hot" or distracting, it's just perfect for such a sweet beer at 9%. They've played it right with this one although I could use a little more of Citra "punch". In the mouth it's medium-full in body, and gently crisp and then velvety smooth. It's sweet for sure but it's also 9% which makes it a sipper, at least for me, and that works out fine. You certainly wouldn't want to pound one of these and yet it is quite enticing; I'm certainly drinking it faster than I should be. One of the problems with that is that you miss out on savoring it and so I should slow down. I'm having this before dinner, which I think is quite appropriate, but for me it would probably be a better after-dinner or late night tipple. Nicely done!
