Karl Strauss is quite the interesting dilemma, truly thought with all the competition around them, they would go by the wayside, but there is something about marketing your wares outside the beer nerd circles that promotes longevity.
In the latest conundrum of configuration, we have the almost 9% single hopped beer. Yeah, you read that right. An almost 9% single hopped CTZ beer. I've had it twice, and they looked very different each time. Alternated between yellow and firmly a dark amber with a smallish 1/8" head, white. The aroma had a light tropical impression, alcohol heat and caramel.
Taste, its decently hopped with CTZ, but the heavy malt hand hid the marijuana like notes. Mostly caramel, apples and guava like note. Alcohol drinks like its a double digit abv. And it isn't even super bitter, the alcohol just oozes out of this one like its going on about bragging rights or some shit.
A 9% single hop ale, to what ends gentlemen? Summary: a decent beer execution wise and a questionable recipe on paper.

According to the server, this one is made with Columbus hops. Big, tangy, fruity. It's such a big mouthful of flavor. Warm and rich. A little hot with alcohol. Lots of flowery notes with a pineapple and grilled mango taste. Slightly sweet but the sugar doesn't stand out. It's well balanced and quite drinkable. As with all the KS beers I've tasted, the acidic side is subdued as the malt fills in the big mouthful.
This is really one of the better DIPAs I've had this year-- it's on the conservative side but it still has huge hops, powerful flavors, and deep tangy hop aromatics. On tap at the Karl Strauss in downtown San Diego. This was the Tank Tap, whatever that means.
